Welcome to the 2010
ATLAS Agora at NYU School of Law!
After the very successful sessions at Osgoode Hall and LSE it is our turn, at NYU School of Law, to host the ATLAS Agora in the Summer of 2010. You will find on this website all details – academic and administrative – relating to the planned program.
In designing the NYU Agora we are building on the two excellent previous programs at Osgoode Hall and LSE. We have studied carefully the participant evaluations, held extensive interviews with teachers and students and have tried to put together a program that builds on past experience and this feedback.
The program is built around 3 principal elements: The Doctoral Workshops, the Methodological lunch lectures and the Module mini-courses.
This is the principal component of the Agora and the one former participants appreciated most. We plan to divide all participants into 3-4 groups based on common doctoral research themes. Each participant will have the chance of presenting his or her research and receive feedback from the Group Moderator (a researcher at NYU Law) and members of the group.
The Methodological Lunch Talks
Throughout the Agora there will each day be a lunch Lecture by NYU scholars focusing on some methodological perspective relevant to doctoral research and legal scholarship more generally. This will also be a chance to meet some of the leading scholars at NYU School of Law.
We will be offering a selection of carefully crafted module Mini-courses of 4-6 hours each from which Agora participants will be able to choose. The topics are "horizontal", i.e. designed to appeal to a broad range of participants across a wide gamut of research interests.
In reviewing the various options and our scheduling design you will see that we have tried to ensure serious commitment, allowing enough time for preparation for the all-important Doctoral Workshops and Mini-courses whilst allowing plenty of time to enjoy the Village and New York City more generally.
The program is open to students already enrolled in doctoral programs at the ATLAS Member institutions – Masters students regrettably may not be admitted. Doctoral students at non-Member institutions may apply and will be considered as space allows (JSD@exchange.law.nyu.edu).
Housing accommodations for participants of the 2010 Agora are available through the Summer Living in New York Program at NYU School of Law. As accommodations are allocated on a weekly basis (Sunday - Saturday), Agora participants must apply for a stay of two weeks (Sunday, June 20 - Saturday, July 3). Applications for summer accommodation are due by March 15, 2010 for guaranteed housing. For additional information regarding the application process, please refer to the 2010 Summer Living in New York Program site. Please contact the Summer Living in New York Program with any questions you may have.
We have invested a lot of thought and effort in an attempt to design a program second to none – enriching, rewarding and, yes, fun. If there is anything unclear in the information provided, please do not hesitate to contact us.
I look forward to welcoming you at NYU in the Summer,
JHH Weiler, ATLAS Academic Director, 2010
