Process

  1. Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria.
  2. Send all elements of your application, other than references and transcripts, together to:

  3. The admission of Open Category applicants will be decided on the sole authority of the Academic Director for the Agora in the year in question (Professor Damian Chalmers of LES in 2009), who may seek such advice as s/he deems needed from the members of the ATLAS Standing Faculty in their capacity as the ATLAS Administrative Committee.
  4. Should your application not be accepted, no reasons for refusal will be provided and there is no appeal.
  5. Should your application be accepted, you will be provided with a letter of acceptance that can be used to apply for a visa to come to the host country, should such visa be necessary.  You will also be provided with information on the timing and modalities for payment of the tuition and administration fee in advance of the Agora. Information on accommodation and other relevant information will also follow.

Materials to include in the application

  1. A cover letter not to exceed 400 words.
  2. Current CV.
  3. A statement that includes two sections:

    Overview of the dissertation title and topic (not to be less than 500 words and no more than 1000).

    Summary of evidence for the sufficiency of the applicant’s English.  Where English is the first language of the applicant, this merely needs to be stated.
  4. Names, contact emails, and telephone numbers for two (2) referees.

Materials to be forwarded by other persons

  1. All university transcripts.  These may be copies made from the files of the graduate program in which the applicant is currently enrolled as a doctoral candidate, as long as sent by the program with a cover letter certifying that these are “accurate copies of the original transcripts to the best knowledge of our program.”
  2. Two letters of reference that address three matters: a) views on the substantive merits of the applicant (i.e. eligibility criterion no. 5*); b) utility of the ATLAS Agora experience for the applicant’s dissertation work; and c) attesting to the sufficiency of the applicant’s English with respect to eligibility criterion no. 3 **). 

    *  Eligibility criterion no. 5: Merit, as demonstrated by: (a) a record of academic excellence, (b) serious potential to produce an outstanding dissertation, and (c) reasonable prospects to make a significant contribution to knowledge, scholarship and/or public policy in the applicant’s post-doctoral career.

    ** Eligibility criterion no 3: The applicant must have advanced English-language competence, sufficient to permit the applicant to interact productively with accomplished English speakers during the Agora (notably during the Dissertation Research Seminar).
